Kitsch

"Kitsch" is a German word describing something "tacky" or "overly sentimental". In the art-world, it is often despised and called "superficial" or "lowly art". Which I find a shame. As it is the most common art-form there is. Every household has a cup with a silly sentence on it, a favourite romantic-novel or perhaps a small toy from childhood-days. This makes it the most democratic form of art. It is obtainable for everyone. Without needing art-historical-background-knowledge or a lot of money.

'Killer Kitsch Queen'

As my artist persona "Killer Kitsch Queen" I seek to create concerts and performance art pieces that question this status quo. Killer Kitsch Queen performs songs about mermaids and bunny rabbits. She dances, blows bubbles and serves big clouds of pink cotton-candy.

Because the world has enough serious art and bad news. It's time for some Kitsch.

'Ambassador of Kitsch'

I have decided to use my status as Queen to "knight" someone once a year as an official 'Ambassador of Kitsch'. These people represent Kitsch par excellence. This year a German woman named Petra was the first to receive this title. She never leaves the house without wearing glitter and she has a phenomenal zest for life, learning breakdancing and acting as a senior citizen.

'The Royal Institute of Kitsch'

In October 2024 I decided to found the 'Royal Institute of Kitsch'. Until now it is an imaginary place anyone can join to learn about Kitsch and carry it forth into the world.
